What’s that in the sky? Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It’s... a fish!
Don’t worry; your eyes aren’t playing tricks. The Flying Fish really does appear to be swimming impossibly through the air. This ingenious balloon is propelled by its sideways-moving tail!
Unlike typical helium balloons (which only want to go up) the Flying Fish is filled with helium – ensuring it simply hangs in the air. You can then use the remote control to make it swim. Up, down, left and right; with a bit of practice you’ll make your living room look like a giant aquarium!
In fact, the fish's movement is so graceful and gentle that you can easily use it in enclosed spaces where twitchy RC helicopters and planes would struggle. Perfect for guarding your bedroom or scaring off unwelcome guests.
- Steers in any direction - up, down, go forward & backward, turn right & left

I got the fish for my daughter (13 yrs old) and the shark for my son (6 yrs old). These were definitely among the favorite toys for Christmas. Assembly requires some patience, a steady hand, basic mechanical know how, a helium tank, 4 AAA batteries and about 20-30 minutes uninterrupted. These things are huge by the way. The helium tank I purchased was for 30 balloons and filled the fish and only half of the shark before running out. I got the tank from Walmart, but you can get them at Target or Party City as well. Luckily, I had another half unused tank in the basement, so no disappointments on Christmas day.
These are basically giant mylar balloons with fins. The remote control makes the fish tip its nose up, down or level and the tail fin propels and turns left or right. There is a counter weight under the fish's body, which the remote control can move to the front of the body to make the nose tip downward for "diving", and can slide to the back of the fish's body to make the nose tip upward for "climbing".
As for storage of this toy - that could be a problem if space is limited. After the fish is assembled, you can't really take it apart or deflate it if you ever want to use it again. The fins and mechanics are all taped on with very heavy duty tape (hence the steady hand required for assembly). As I mentioned before, these things are quite large. We just got these a few days ago, so I suppose I will keep them in the basement storage area when not in use.
These Flying Fishes are great fun for older kids and adults too. My husband and I took them over when the kids were done. My 13 year old probably likes it better than my 6 year old. They require some patience to operate.
I work in a college of science, so we had the helium on hand, although the rest of putting it together was a little intimidating at first (so much tape..) I ordered the clown fish and we loved it. getting it balanced with the putty was actually a good time and once it was up and running we spent a lot of time watching the person I secret-santa-ed flying it around the empty halls. it was awesome.
Two days before Christmas my 8 year old son son said "Mom, the only thing I really want for Christmas is a Flying Fish!" Oops! That would have been great info to give to Santa a little bit sooner! Luckily Santa was able to get this toy. Yes, it was a splurge but he was so excited to see it there on Christmas morning and couldn't wait to play with it. Had it filled at our local grocery store for 1.00.
I would suggest reading the directions very carefully in their entirety and then following them exactly step by step...definitely a two person job, as the inflated fish is large and pretty unwieldy. It was kind of a pain to put together but we got through it with lots of patience. While I was assembling it my heart was sinking, thinking there is no way this flimsy looking toy could possibly work.
Weighting correctly with the putty took all of about 2 minutes, and lo and behold, the thing is swimming through the air. My kids were absolutely ecstatic...it swims with a very realistic motion and my 8 year old was quickly able to maneuver it quite well...he makes it dive and spin and chase people and our dog. The family room looks like a big aquarium. It's hysterical, and has been every kid's favorite toy who has visited us.
I can't imagine this toy will last forever as it is rather flimsy but it has made it through more than a week of frequent use, and the fun they have had with has been well worth it. I put a couple of stars for educational because my son helped me put it together and he learned the value of patience...maybe a bit of a simple lesson in aeronautical engineering too, lol.
I work for an engineering firm and I was fascinated by the air swimmers. I bought one for my office and it was a hit. We let everyone in the office fly Nemo and it helps relieve stress. Eventually, one of my co-workers children loved it so much we had to let her have it. She has shown it to her friends and they love it. I might be buying a lot more of these Flying Fishes to appease the demand.
I got the Clownfish version for my nephew. It was pretty easy to build by adults and has double back tape and clear tape at all the connections (e.g. fins, tail fin hooks and ballast) so it is pretty rugged for a balloon ship. Had to configure the remote and receiver so they recognized each other though the instructions stated this was only required for using two Air Swimmers at a time. It is very fun to fly for kids and adults and was the coolest gift under the Christmas tree this year.
